Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Why should I pay for these services?
All students are different. There is no one size fits all to the college application and financial aid process. Excellence Matters offers individualized assessment and evaluation of each student. We offer these services in a group or individual setting. Our sessions are customized to meet your student’s individual needs. You can feel comfortable asking questions and if we don’t have the answers we will find them.

Why can’t I use the Internet?
Although you will find a large amount of information on the Internet, it can be overwhelming and confusing. There are also a lot of scholarship scams. It is important that you are well informed. It is also important for a child to be placed in a school or program that meets their specific needs. Ms. Oyedokun can help you and your student by giving you information and resources that are specific to your student without you having to search through hundreds of websites. Excellence Matters does all of the leg work, so you don’t have to.

Why doesn’t my child’s school give me this information?
School professionals have heavy student case loads and do not have time to reach every student. In many cases students are wrongly identified as a non-college bound student. Excellence Matters can provide an abundance of resources from which to choose in order to satisfy the interests of those students who wish to pursue post-secondary education.

What consultation fees are involved?
Fees are based on the type of services rendered. They are calculated in one of three ways:

Size and needs of a group
Flat, all inclusive fee for on-time assessment/evaluation (meeting with the parents and student, review of documentation, consult with the referral source)
Hourly- by arrangement
Monthly – for on-going consultation
When do I start the process?
Typically, students begin the process during their junior year, but some students like to come earlier to get tips on what activities to involve themselves in or which courses to take in 9th and 10th grade. Our philosophy is it is never too early to prepare for college.

Do you help prep for the SAT/ACT?
Referrals are made to professionals who help prepare students for the SAT and/or ACT or who may need help with specific subjects.

Can results be guaranteed?
Every effort is made to enhance a student’s strengths and position them for admission to an appropriate institution; however, it is the student’s credentials which will ultimately determine their admissibility.

Do you provide tutoring?
Yes, we have partnered with university students to provide tutoring for a small fee.

My student lacks motivation and is not doing well in his/her classes. What can you do to help?
We can provide your student with a tutor-mentor. We can work with your student’s school counselor and teachers to keep track of your child’s grades and behavior.
